Seeing Space

The depiction of the three-dimensional on a two-dimensional surface is a fundamental skill of the visual designer. Depending on the context, it only takes a few means to show artistic and virtual realities. However, when the habitual perception of three- dimensionality is challenged, irritation occurs. Then the following questions arise: When do I see surfaces, when do I see space, and when do I see three-dimensionality? What are the key aspects of two-dimensional pictures that allow or impede the illusion of space?

A systematic study of the use of lines, surfaces and elements on images and objects intends to explore the borders of perceiving two- and three-dimensionality. The study also includes a focus on irritating moments with respect to spatial imagery. The results are pictorial representations with annotating comments.
