The teaching of Josef Müller-Brockmann

Analysis of his tenure at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich between 1957 and 1960

Josef Mülller-Brockmann is regarded as one of the most influential practitioners of the Swiss Style. This research project analyses Müller-Brockmann as a teacher at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich between 1957 and 1960. Within the project, his teaching is set in correlation with his personality, his former pupils, and the temporal conditions.

Müller-Brockmann's programmatic teaching mainly focussed on the need to create a «new world» by making use of constructive graphics. The priority of his work as a teacher was the dissemination of his design principles. His students’ work and interviews give an insight into this era of Müller-Brockmann’s life. Design-historical research and contemporary design unite in the two created publications.
